An Awami League leader was allegedly hacked to death by unidentified assailants in Jhenaidah district of Bangladesh, amid growing concerns over political violence and deteriorating human rights conditions in the country.
The deceased was identified as 48-year-old Monayem Hossain, who was attacked while returning home from the Moyenkhali Bazar area of Harinakundu upazila on Wednesday night, Bangladeshi media outlet UNB reported.
Police said Hossain suffered multiple deep wounds, including injuries to his abdomen, and that one of his hands was nearly severed. He was taken to Kushtia General Hospital, where doctors later declared him dead.
His wife, Shilpi Khatun, appealed for justice, saying the killing had left her widowed and their children without their father.
The killing comes amid a reported rise in political violence across Bangladesh. Dhaka-based human rights organisation Manabadhikar Shongskriti Foundation (MSF), in its latest monthly review, said violence against women and children as well as political violence increased sharply in August compared with July.
According to the report, 267 people were injured in political violence in August, compared with 95 in July — an increase of 181 per cent. Deaths linked to violence against women and children also rose by 75 per cent during the month, the organisation said.
The recovery of unidentified bodies was another major concern. MSF reported that 71 unidentified bodies were recovered across Bangladesh in August, compared with 56 in July. The bodies were reportedly found in locations including rivers, ponds, roads, railway tracks, fields and abandoned areas.
MSF described the country’s human rights situation as alarming and called for stronger rule of law, an end to mob justice and political violence, safeguards against arbitrary arrests, accountability for custodial abuses and greater protection for journalists, minorities and marginalised communities.
The organisation also called for prompt and impartial investigations into serious human rights violations, including cases involving unidentified bodies, and urged authorities to ensure accountability for those responsible.
