Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said all Kashmiri Pandit employees posted in the Valley under the Prime Minister’s Special Package have been provided transit accommodation, rejecting claims that any of them are without a place to stay.
Omar was responding to protests by Kashmiri Pandit employees, who have been seeking relocation to Jammu, citing security concerns and alleged threats while serving in various departments across the Kashmir Valley.
The Jammu and Kashmir government has constructed gated and secured transit accommodations in several districts for migrant employees posted in the Valley. The multi-storeyed complexes, comprising residential flats, are secured by security forces.
“Which Kashmiri Pandit is without a home? None of them are homeless. Wherever transit accommodation has been prepared, they have been provided homes,” Omar said.
He added that employees requiring accommodation should approach the government, while suggesting that protests were being held without sufficient reason.
“If anyone needs a home, let us know. The rest have already been provided homes,” the Chief Minister said.
However, the employees’ concerns extend beyond accommodation. Many of those appointed under the PM package have their families living in Jammu or elsewhere, while they are required to stay in secured transit facilities in the Valley.
Most of these employees want to be transferred out of Kashmir, citing security concerns and other difficulties, Omar said.
The employees, meanwhile, have alleged that they face serious security risks and targeted threats from terror groups and proxy outfits, including The Resistance Front (TRF) and the United Liberation Council (ULC).
They have also cited alleged threat letters and hit lists targeting Kashmiri Pandit government employees and teachers recruited under the Prime Minister’s Rehabilitation Package. According to the employees, some recent threats have contained personal details such as names, addresses, phone numbers and vehicle registration numbers, increasing their concerns for their safety.
The employees have staged prolonged protests and approached the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), seeking relief from transfer restrictions and relocation to Jammu until the security situation in the Valley improves.
