Sukhbir Badal Misses SIT Appearance; SAD Calls Behbal Kalan Probe ‘Political’, Seeks Written Questions

Chandigarh, September 11, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Friday did not appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Behbal Kalan firing case, citing medical reasons and seeking more time to join the investigation.

SAD leaders Parambans Singh Bunty Romana and Advocate Arshdeep Singh Kaler instead appeared before the SIT and submitted a letter on behalf of the party president.

Badal had been asked to appear before the investigating team at 11 am on September 11.

Speaking to the media after submitting the letter, Romana and Kaler said Badal could not appear as he was undergoing a medical check-up concerning an injury to his arm sustained during an attack at Nanded in Maharashtra.

They said Badal had communicated his inability to appear before the SIT through the letter delivered by them as well as through email and WhatsApp.

The Akali leaders said Badal had sought time from the investigating team as the SAD had back-to-back political rallies scheduled in the coming days. According to them, the party president would be available to appear before the SIT only after September 30.

The SAD also asked the SIT to provide Badal with a written questionnaire, saying he would submit signed written answers to the questions.

Romana and Kaler argued that a written exchange would put both the SIT’s questions and Badal’s responses on record and allow the public to know what was being asked and answered in connection with the investigation.

The two SAD leaders also termed the investigation and repeated summons to Badal “political” and accused the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government of attempting to build what they described as a “fake narrative” against the SAD president and the party.

Questioning the timing of the latest summons, they maintained that Badal had previously honoured summons issued by different SITs and had appeared whenever called.

They further alleged that Badal was summoned whenever the Punjab government or AAP faced a major political issue, claiming that such action was intended to divert public attention.

The allegations made by the SAD leaders are political claims. The SIT is investigating the Behbal Kalan firing case, and Badal’s request seeking additional time will now be considered by the investigating authorities.
