Mizoram Police have seized methamphetamine tablets, heroin and other contraband worth an estimated Rs 14.77 crore in a series of operations and arrested six people, including five Myanmar nationals, officials said on Thursday.
In the first operation, a police team conducting random checks at Kualmawi in the Keifang area of Saitual district recovered 12.746 kg of methamphetamine tablets valued at around Rs 10.20 crore. Two Myanmar nationals, Chinzalian, 26, and Thiankhatmuanga, 27, both residents of Rangoon, were arrested in connection with the seizure.
In a separate operation at Chalbawia Junction, Khankawn Police Checkgate, officers recovered 994 grams of methamphetamine tablets worth Rs 79.52 lakh from a passenger travelling in a Maxi cab. The accused, Hrang Thawm Hnim, 39, is a resident of Sathmuhzung in Myanmar.
Another police team in Champhai district recovered 141 grams of heroin, with an estimated local market value of Rs 28.20 lakh, from two passengers travelling in a vehicle from Zokhawthar towards Aizawl. The accused, Awngminnine, 19, and Bawithawng, 18, are also Myanmar nationals.
In Kolasib district, police intercepted a Mahindra Scorpio at Phaisen Police Checkgate while it was travelling from Aizawl towards Karimganj in Assam. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 3.910 kg of methamphetamine tablets valued at around Rs 3.2 crore. Guljar Hussain, 23, a resident of Karimganj district, was arrested.
In another seizure, police recovered 3,360 kg, or 42 bags, of dry areca nuts, commonly known as Burmese betel nuts, from a truck at the Chalbawia Junction checkgate. The consignment, valued at around Rs 30 lakh, was allegedly being transported without a valid trade licence, transportation permit or other required documents and is suspected to have been smuggled from Myanmar.
Police said the seizures highlight the vulnerability of Mizoram’s international border with Myanmar to cross-border drug trafficking. Six Mizoram districts — Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual and Serchhip — share a 510-km border with Myanmar’s Chin State.
Officials said substantial stretches of the international border remain unfenced, making the region vulnerable to the trafficking of heroin and methamphetamine. Mizoram and Manipur have emerged as major trafficking corridors in the Northeast because of their porous borders with Myanmar and proximity to the Golden Triangle, a major illicit narcotics-producing region.
