Actor-producer Viveck Vaswani has recalled the morning of September 11, 2001, when he was in Toronto for the world premiere of his first English-language film and witnessed the shock of the 9/11 attacks unfold.
Marking the 25th anniversary of the attacks, Vaswani shared a throwback photograph featuring himself, Pooja Bhatt and Rahul Bose from the period when his film was being showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
Recalling the day, Vaswani said he had arrived in Toronto filled with excitement as his first English film had been selected for the festival. He and filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker woke up early that morning to watch Monsoon Wedding.
“At @tiff_net on the 11th of September 2001, my film had its World Premiere. It was an early Toronto morning, biting cold, I was extremely excited. My first English film and an official selection in #tiff,” Vaswani wrote.
He recalled that he and Gowariker went to an early-morning screening of Monsoon Wedding and emerged from the cinema around 10 a.m., only to learn that the United States had been attacked.
“@ashutoshg… and me woke up early that day, 7am to see Monsoon Wedding. We got out of the cinema at 10am and the world had changed. America had been attacked,” he wrote.
Vaswani described September 11 as a “gruesome day” and reflected on the passage of time since the attacks, ending his post with the phrase, “who is John Galt?”
On September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four commercial aircraft. Two planes were flown into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center in New York, while another struck the Pentagon. The fourth crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew confronted the hijackers. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks.
Vaswani has worked across acting, film production and writing during his career and has been associated with several films and television projects.
