Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab spokesperson Ranbir Singh Dhindsa on Friday accused Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal of repeatedly avoiding appearing before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the beadbi, Behbal Kalan and Kotkapura firing cases, alleging that the Akali Dal-BJP nexus had been exposed.
Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh along with Mora Singh Anjaan and Ripandeep Singh, Dhindsa questioned Badal’s failure to appear before the SIT and alleged that he was compromising Punjab’s interests in return for political protection in the cases.
Dhindsa said Badal had earlier appeared before Sri Akal Takht Sahib after being summoned and, according to the AAP leader, accepted responsibility for the beadbi incidents and the firing on a peaceful congregation engaged in ardas and Gurbani. He also referred to the religious punishment undertaken by Badal’s Cabinet colleagues.
“If you came before the highest court of the Guru, admitted your guilt, then how can you now refuse to speak the truth before the SIT?” Dhindsa asked, questioning what had happened to Badal’s commitment to the Guru and the Panth.
Dhindsa also challenged Badal’s reported claim that he was abroad when the firing took place. Referring to Faridkot court records and Badal’s own writ petition, he alleged that the former Home Minister was actually at a five-star hotel and remained in contact with senior police officials during the incident.
“When the conversation continued throughout the night while he was the Home Minister, then who bears responsibility for it?” Dhindsa asked.
The AAP spokesperson alleged that Badal’s latest reluctance to appear before the SIT was linked to a political understanding with the BJP leadership in Delhi. He claimed that Badal was being assured protection from the beadbi cases in exchange for supporting the BJP on issues affecting Punjab, including the farm laws.
Dhindsa further alleged that the SAD-BJP relationship had never completely ended despite the alliance being formally broken in 2020. He cited the Akali Dal’s alleged support for the BJP candidate in presidential elections and the vote of its lone Lok Sabha member on a Bill in Parliament as examples.
He questioned what had happened to the SAD’s earlier positions on minimum support price (MSP), farm laws and Sikh issues, alleging that the party leadership was now primarily concerned with avoiding accountability in the beadbi cases.
Dhindsa appealed to Punjabis to remain vigilant and accused the Badal family and SAD leadership of putting their political interests ahead of Punjab’s concerns. He urged people to question the Badals over what he described as their “anti-Punjab” politics.
