The 31st edition of the Fenesta Open National Tennis Championship began with the organisers announcing an Rs 11 lakh Player Development Scholarship aimed at providing additional support to emerging tennis players in India.

The scholarship will be awarded to winners and runners-up across the Men’s, Women’s, U-18, U-16 and U-14 singles categories. It will be provided over and above the tournament’s existing prize money and is intended to help players meet expenses related to their long-term development.

The Fenesta Open already offers a prize pool of more than Rs 21.55 lakh, along with a kit allowance for players competing in the junior categories.

Under the new scholarship structure, winners in the Men’s, Women’s, Boys’ U-18 and Girls’ U-18 singles categories will receive Rs 1.05 lakh each, while runners-up will get Rs 60,000 each.

Winners in the Boys’ and Girls’ U-16 and U-14 singles categories will receive Rs 70,000 each, while runners-up will be awarded Rs 40,000 each.

The scholarship can be used for professional coaching, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, strength and conditioning, as well as tennis equipment and kit.

Ajay Shriram, Chairman and Senior Managing Director of DCM Shriram Ltd., said the Fenesta Open had remained committed to providing Indian players with a national platform and that the scholarship would extend this support beyond the tournament.

Vikram Shriram, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of DCM Shriram Ltd., said player development required sustained access to coaching, physical conditioning, physiotherapy and appropriate equipment. He said the scholarship had been designed to address these practical requirements and help promising players progress to higher levels of competitive tennis.

DCM Shriram’s association with Indian tennis dates back more than three decades to the organisation of an Open Tennis Championship for Delhi State in 1992. The company has organised the National Hardcourt Tennis Championship annually since 1998.

The Fenesta Open has since evolved into one of India’s major domestic tennis championships, bringing together senior and junior players across the Men’s, Women’s, U-18, U-16 and U-14 categories.

Over the years, the tournament has featured leading Indian players including Rohan Bopanna, Somdev Devvarman, Yuki Bhambri and Sania Mirza.

Organised under the aegis of the All India Tennis Association and Delhi Lawn Tennis Association, the championship is supported by DCM Shriram Ltd. and serves as a national platform for identifying and encouraging emerging tennis talent.
