New Delhi, October 6, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) on Tuesday dismissed as misleading social media claims that officials of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had reached out to Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to end the Opposition protest outside the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters.

In a Fact Check posted on social media, the PIB urged people not to rely on unverified information and to refer only to verified sources. The fact-check included screenshots of posts attributed to a journalist and a news channel website carrying the claims.

The claims surfaced amid a dramatic Opposition protest near Nirvachan Sadan, where Rahul Gandhi led around 300 Opposition MPs from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha in a march from Parliament towards the ECI office.

The Opposition MPs sought a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and other Election Commissioners but were stopped by security personnel before reaching the Commission’s office.

“We wanted to meet the CEC and the Election Commissioners, but we were stopped and prevented from going there,” Rahul Gandhi told reporters from near the ECI office.

After being stopped, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other Opposition leaders staged a dharna inside Akashvani Bhavan, located close to the ECI headquarters.

The protest drew criticism from BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad, who questioned whether the Opposition was attempting to create “anarchy” in the national capital.

Speaking to IANS, Prasad accused the protesters of surrounding a sensitive area and criticised their allegations against CEC Gyanesh Kumar. He also condemned Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s reported demand for cancellation of elections and fresh polls using ballot papers.

Prasad alleged that the Congress wanted to win elections through pressure rather than electoral contests, and made further claims regarding its electoral practices. These allegations were not independently established.

The PIB Fact Check came as political tensions escalated over the Opposition’s allegations concerning the functioning of the Election Commission and the electoral process.
