The controversy surrounding the removal of former CPI(M) Palakkad district secretary E.N. Suresh Babu intensified on Tuesday after a Congress leader sought a police case over allegations of sexual harassment, while questions were raised over the party leadership’s handling of the complaint.
Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee secretary John Daniel submitted a complaint to Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, demanding registration of a case against Suresh Babu. He also sought that Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan and CPI(M) state secretary M.V. Govindan be named as accused, alleging that they were aware of the complaint but failed to hand it over to the police.
Daniel said the allegations raised serious concerns about the safety of women involved in public life and demanded a police investigation and stringent action.
The controversy follows reports that a young woman lawyer approached the CPI(M) leadership with allegations of sexual harassment against Suresh Babu and submitted digital evidence. She has reportedly alleged that he continued contacting and harassing her after the alleged incident.
The CPI(M) has not officially clarified whether the complaint was the reason for Suresh Babu’s removal as district secretary. However, reports indicate that the party is considering further disciplinary action, including possible expulsion from primary membership.
Vijayan did not respond when reporters sought his reaction on Tuesday. Senior leaders including K.K. Shailaja, E.P. Jayarajan, M.V. Jayarajan, V.N. Vasavan and Thomas Isaac also avoided commenting in detail. Jayarajan defended the party’s action as an organisational matter and accused the media of targeting the CPI(M).
The issue has also triggered a political exchange involving former Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil, who faced sexual misconduct allegations last year and was subsequently expelled from the Congress. Mamkootathil criticised Suresh Babu on social media and alleged that the woman lawyer was called to a party office on the pretext of discussing a legal matter before the alleged misconduct.
The allegations against Suresh Babu remain unproven, and no police case has been reported in connection with them so far.
