Polling for the Nandigram and Rejinagar Assembly constituencies in West Bengal concluded on Tuesday amid reports of tension, alleged voter intimidation and electoral malpractices from both seats.
Voting ended at 6 p.m., although polling continued at some booths where voters were still waiting in queues.
According to a source in the office of the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer, the average polling percentage in the two constituencies stood at 78.90 per cent till 5 p.m. Rejinagar recorded 78.42 per cent polling, while Nandigram registered 79.39 per cent.
The source said the final turnout figures were expected later on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, with the overall polling percentage likely to cross 80 per cent.
The high turnout came despite allegations of irregularities during the day. The Congress and the All India Trinamool Congress demanded repolling across Rejinagar and at some booths in Nandigram.
The BJP, however, rejected the allegations, maintaining that voters in both constituencies participated enthusiastically and that the high turnout reflected a festive atmosphere.
An important development during the polling was the arrest of Aam Janata Unnayan Party founder and legislator Humayun Kabir during the first hour of voting. He was arrested on allegations of influencing voters, threatening police personnel and allegedly holding an on-duty police officer by the collar.
BJP candidates Hasirani Rath from Nandigram and Shakharav Sarkar from Rejinagar expressed confidence in securing comfortable victories.
Former West Bengal Congress president and five-time Lok Sabha member Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, meanwhile, claimed that the Congress had a strong chance of winning Rejinagar and alleged that BJP supporters, with police assistance, had engaged in widespread electoral malpractice.
The allegations made by political parties were not independently established in the source material.
