Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Tuesday assured a four-member delegation of the Bandi Singh Insaaf Morcha that the state government would pursue all legitimate legal and constitutional avenues for an early resolution of the long-pending issue of Bandi Sikhs.
During a meeting with committee members Gurdeep Singh Bathinda, Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur, Pal Singh France and Balwinder Pal Singh, Mann said the issue of Sikh prisoners who have completed their sentences but continue to remain in jails cannot be allowed to remain unresolved indefinitely.
The Chief Minister said steps that should have been taken by previous governments but remained pending for years would now be pursued on priority.
Taking to X, Mann said he had listened carefully to the committee’s views and appeal regarding the release of Bandi Sikhs. He assured the delegation that the Punjab Government was committed to finding an appropriate solution to the issue at the earliest.
Mann said the government would pursue all legitimate and legal steps within the framework of the Constitution and the law, while keeping in view the principles of justice, humanity and individual rights.
“The issue of Sikh prisoners languishing in various jails across the country, even after completion of their sentences, cannot be allowed to remain unresolved indefinitely. It is an emotive and sensitive issue for everyone,” Mann said.
He added that several legitimate steps concerning the matter had remained pending for years despite successive governments being in a position to act.
“The steps which should have been taken years ago but were not taken will now be pursued on priority,” the Chief Minister said.
Mann stressed that the state government would approach the matter with sensitivity and responsibility and would respect the constitutional and legal framework.
“The Punjab Government will make every possible effort within the law and the Constitution to find a meaningful and expeditious resolution to the issue of Bandi Sikhs,” he said.
The Chief Minister further asserted that his government would not shy away from taking difficult but necessary steps to secure justice through lawful means. He said the government would continue to work towards resolving legitimate issues concerning the people of Punjab through democratic, constitutional and legal means.
