The Centre has cleared the appointment of judicial officer Gurvinder Pal Singh as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court, nearly a month after the Supreme Court Collegium recommended his elevation along with seven other judicial officers.
Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the appointment in a post on X, stating that the President, in exercise of powers under the Constitution and after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, had appointed Singh as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court.
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended eight judicial officers for elevation at its meeting on September 10. The names included Gurvinder Pal Singh, Nivedita Anil Sharma, Nisha Sahay Saxena, Sanjay Sharma-I, Bharat Parashar, Dr Aditi Choudhary, Dinesh Bhatt and Arun Bhardwaj.
The Centre subsequently notified the appointments of seven of the eight recommended candidates on September 19.
Nivedita Sharma and Nisha Sahay Saxena were appointed as judges of the Delhi High Court, while Sanjay Sharma-I, Bharat Parashar, Dr Aditi Choudhary, Dinesh Bhatt and Arun Bhardwaj were appointed as Additional Judges.
Singh was the only candidate from the Collegium’s September 10 recommendations whose appointment was not included in the September 19 notification. His elevation has now received the Centre’s approval.
Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of Law and Justice on Monday also cleared the appointment of Gujarat High Court Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal, Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Telangana High Court Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh as judges of the Supreme Court.
Their appointments followed the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation on September 28 for their elevation to the apex court.
