Several Opposition MPs belonging to the INDIA bloc marched towards the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters on Tuesday, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over what they described as irregularities related to electoral decisions and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
The demonstration brought together MPs from the Congress, Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party and other INDIA bloc constituents, with protesters raising concerns over the electoral roll revision process and the functioning of the poll panel.
Samajwadi Party MP Virendra Singh said he joined the protest following instructions from party president Akhilesh Yadav.
“I do not know about the INDI Alliance, but our national president has called upon all MPs to reach Makar Dwar. We are all party workers, we have come here on the instructions of our national president,” Singh said.
Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee launched a sharp attack on the CEC during the demonstration and called for Kumar’s resignation.
Congress MP Imran Masood also demanded Kumar’s resignation, alleging that the CEC had undermined the credibility of the Election Commission as an independent and impartial institution.
“The CEC should resign. Gyanesh Kumar has broken the trust that the Election Commission had earned as an independent and impartial institution in the country,” Masood said.
Asked about the decision of the Aam Aadmi Party, DMK and Biju Janata Dal to stay away from the protest, Masood said parties supporting Rahul Gandhi would be visible in the ongoing political campaign.
Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat said the INDIA bloc’s demonstration was aimed at opposing the SIR exercise and seeking Kumar’s resignation.
The protest has brought Opposition concerns over electoral roll revisions and the functioning of the Election Commission into sharper political focus. At the same time, the absence of some Opposition parties has highlighted differences among INDIA bloc constituents over the extent of coordination on the issue.
The allegations raised by the protesting MPs are political claims and do not constitute findings against the Election Commission or the CEC.
