The Rajasthan government has suspended Special Operations Group (SOG) Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mukesh Kumar Soni, who was arrested in connection with an alleged Rs 2 crore bribery case linked to a 272-plot land matter in Udaipur.
The Home Department issued the suspension order after receiving approval from the Chief Minister’s Office, with the action taking effect from September 27. The decision followed a report submitted by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB).
According to the ACB, Soni allegedly demanded Rs 2 crore in exchange for providing relief to accused persons in the Udaipur land case. The agency arrested alleged middleman Sajjan Singh Jain, alias Tatla, on September 26 while he was allegedly accepting Rs 2 crore. Soni was arrested the following day.
The ACB said the alleged bribe demand was verified over three days through digital recordings after a complaint was received. Investigators also secured recordings of two WhatsApp calls allegedly facilitated by Sajjan Singh between the complainant and Soni.
As part of the probe, the ACB took Sajjan Singh to Soni’s residence for on-site verification. Investigators said he had frequently visited the residence in connection with the alleged transaction.
The ACB also examined a meeting between Soni, Sajjan Singh and complainant Niranjan Mogra near Mahakaleshwar Temple on September 23. According to the agency, the meeting time was changed three times and Soni eventually arrived around 6.30 p.m. Investigators said the alleged bribe details were communicated by Soni through his mobile phone rather than verbally.
The ACB recovered files relating to 41 plots from Soni’s office. The files were linked to the Municipal Corporation, while several documents reportedly carried the seal and signature of the Udaipur Development Authority (UDA). Investigators are examining whether these documents are genuine or fabricated and are also probing alleged alterations in plot numbers and possible tampering with files.
The wider case concerns allegations that forged documents and lease deeds were created for vacant or cancelled plots to facilitate changes in ownership records before the properties were allegedly sold. An FIR was registered at Surajpol Police Station in 2022.
The Municipal Corporation subsequently cancelled 48 lease deeds. The SOG had also arrested former District Minority Officer Hemlata Kankariya and her husband, Niranjan Mogra, in connection with the case.
The investigation reportedly led to the recovery of around 2 kg of gold jewellery and Rs 11 lakh in cash from Mogra’s residence. The ACB alleges that the Rs 2 crore demand was linked to an assurance of filing a final report to close the case and returning the seized items.
The ACB investigation and departmental proceedings are continuing.
