IndiGo has announced higher fuel surcharges on both domestic and international flights, citing a sharp increase in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices that has pushed fuel costs to among their highest levels in the past decade.
The revised charges will apply to all new bookings made from October 6, the airline said on Monday.
IndiGo said ATF prices have risen steadily in recent months, with the latest month-on-month increase exceeding 14 per cent. The airline noted that fuel constitutes a significant portion of airline operating costs and that the sustained increase is likely to affect the cost structure and network economics of carriers.
For domestic flights, passengers travelling up to 500 km will pay a fuel surcharge of Rs 375. The charge will rise to Rs 600 for journeys between 501 km and 1,000 km, Rs 900 for distances between 1,001 km and 1,500 km, and Rs 1,150 for flights covering 1,501 km to 2,000 km.
Routes exceeding 2,000 km will attract a surcharge of Rs 1,300.
International passengers will also face higher fuel charges. Flights within the SAARC region will carry a surcharge of Rs 1,000 for distances up to 500 km and Rs 3,000 beyond 500 km.
For flights to Southeast Asia, the GCC, the Middle East, and North and East Asia, the fuel surcharge has been set at Rs 5,500. Passengers travelling to Africa and Europe will be charged Rs 6,000.
IndiGo attributed the increase to persistent volatility in global crude oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty, which have kept fuel costs elevated.
The airline said it had opted for a measured increase despite the sharp rise in its fuel expenses, noting that fully offsetting the higher ATF costs would have required a substantially larger adjustment.
The latest move comes as higher fuel prices add to the operating pressures facing airlines, with ATF remaining one of the largest components of their overall expenditure.
