Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal has extended the party’s support to the nationwide movement against alleged “vote theft”, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
During a three-day visit to Goa, Kejriwal said the demand for Kumar’s resignation had gained nationwide support and asserted that the CEC would have to step down.
Referring to the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Kejriwal alleged that genuine voters were being removed while fake names were being added to voter lists. He claimed that such practices were being used to influence election outcomes.
“I am in Goa for the next three days and have several meetings lined up with different people and party workers. But I want to say that the way there is a demand at the national level for CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, the entire country is now coming together for it,” he said.
Kejriwal further alleged that elections won by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in recent years were linked to the deletion of genuine voters and addition of fake voters through SIR.
“Over the past few years, it is now coming to light that whatever elections PM Modi has won were won only and only by getting genuine voters’ names deleted from the electoral rolls and adding fake voters through SIR,” he said.
Describing the alleged practice as “absolutely wrong and against democracy”, Kejriwal said it had made a “mockery of democracy”.
“Therefore, we support this demand, and Gyanesh Kumar should resign immediately,” the AAP leader said.
The allegations come amid an escalating Opposition campaign against the Election Commission over the SIR exercise and alleged irregularities in electoral rolls. The Election Commission and the BJP have faced repeated criticism from Opposition parties over the issue.
