The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a fireman of Jammu and Kashmir’s Fire and Emergency Services for allegedly accepting a Rs 15,000 bribe from a hotel owner in Katra in connection with the issuance of a fire No-Objection Certificate (NOC).
The accused, Nitish Singh Jamwal, is posted at the office of the Assistant Director of Fire and Emergency Services in Udhampur. According to the CBI, he was caught red-handed during a trap operation after allegedly accepting the bribe from the complainant.
The agency registered a case against Jamwal on Tuesday based on a complaint alleging that he had demanded Rs 40,000 from the hotel owner for processing and issuing the Fire and Emergency Services NOC for the hotel in Katra.
The CBI said the amount was subsequently negotiated to Rs 15,000, following which a trap was laid and Jamwal was arrested while allegedly accepting the money.
The arrest comes weeks after the CBI apprehended three people in another alleged bribery case involving the Jammu and Kashmir Agriculture Department.
On September 19, the agency registered a case against Sub-Divisional Agriculture Officer (SDAO) Rajan Sharma, Agricultural Extension Assistant (AEA) Abhilashi Sharma and private individual Ashok Kumar over an alleged demand for Rs 35,000 from a beneficiary for releasing subsidy under the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP).
According to the CBI, the SDAO allegedly directed the complainant to pay the money either to the AEA or Ashok Kumar.
The agency subsequently laid a trap and allegedly caught Abhilashi Sharma and Ashok Kumar while demanding and accepting Rs 15,000 from the complainant. The CBI later arrested Rajan Sharma from his residence.
The investigation into both cases is continuing. The allegations in the cases are subject to further investigation and legal proceedings.
