Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday criticised Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over the INDIA bloc’s protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, urging Gandhi to focus on public service instead.
The remarks came after INDIA bloc MPs marched towards the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters, demanding the resignation of the CEC. Security personnel stopped the protesters midway.
Calling the demonstration “drama”, Rijiju accused the Congress and Rahul Gandhi of repeatedly targeting constitutional institutions.
“Every day, the Congress Party, Rahul Gandhi and his colleagues keep creating this drama and attacking the Election Commission and the Supreme Court. It is time to stop this. This drama has been going on continuously since 2014. How long will this continue?” Rijiju said.
He argued that political parties should focus on serving people and earning their mandate rather than questioning the Election Commission after electoral setbacks. He also criticised the Congress for its statements against the Supreme Court and other institutions.
Targeting Rahul Gandhi, Rijiju said, “Learn from PM Modi and learn from BJP workers, who continuously and selflessly work not for themselves but for the society and the country. You should also do the same.”
He urged Gandhi to stop what he described as political “drama” and said sustained public service would help earn people’s trust.
Rijiju also attacked the Congress over the Emergency imposed during former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s tenure. Referring to the constitutional changes made during the Emergency, he questioned the party’s claims on democracy.
“The Congress Party got an opportunity to rule this country for 55 years, and during that period, it imposed Emergency for two years. During the Emergency, the Preamble of the Constitution was changed. This is the character of the Congress Party. And today, they talk about democracy?” he said.
The Union Minister also urged the Congress and Rahul Gandhi to refrain from what he described as promoting narratives pushed by “anti-India forces”. He alleged that foreign forces were attempting to weaken India and discredit its constitutional institutions.
Rijiju further said that instead of focusing on social media narratives, the Congress should concentrate on public service if it wanted to regain electoral support.
“I myself have served people in villages while being in the Opposition for 25 years,” he said, adding that the country was working towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Viksit Bharat”.
Rijiju concluded by asserting that the people would not support what he called the “drama” surrounding Rahul Gandhi and the INDIA bloc’s protest.
