A British Airways flight from London to Chicago declared an emergency while flying over Ireland on Monday, triggering the 7700 emergency transponder code and prompting the aircraft to descend to around 9,000 feet, according to flight-tracking data.
British Airways flight BA295 was operating a Boeing aircraft when it activated the emergency alert while en route across the Atlantic, flight-tracking website Flightradar24 reported.
The aircraft’s emergency signal and descent drew attention from aviation observers, although the precise nature of the incident was not immediately known.
The 7700 transponder code is used by pilots to alert air traffic control to a general emergency and request priority assistance. The code itself does not indicate the specific nature of the problem, which could include a technical issue, medical emergency or another operational concern.
British Airways had not immediately disclosed the reason for the emergency declaration. Further details about the aircraft’s condition, flight path and whether it continued towards Chicago were awaited.
The incident occurred days after another aviation emergency involving flydubai flight FZ1073, which diverted after an alleged cockpit attack during a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
That Boeing 737 MAX 8, carrying 174 passengers and crew, transmitted both the 7700 emergency code and the 7500 code associated with unlawful interference or a possible hijacking situation on September 30.
According to reports, the aircraft entered a rapid descent following the alleged cockpit altercation. Despite sustaining injuries, the captain regained control with assistance from passengers and off-duty pilots travelling on the flight. The aircraft later diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia and landed safely.
Authorities in the United Arab Emirates subsequently described the incident as a terrorist attack and launched an investigation. The co-pilot involved was later taken into UAE custody.
The British Airways incident is understood to be separate from the flydubai case, with no indication so far of any connection between the two incidents.
Aviation authorities and British Airways are expected to provide further information once the circumstances surrounding BA295’s emergency declaration are established.
