Police in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district have arrested a man and recovered heroin and ganja from his possession during an anti-drug operation in Surankote, officials said on Tuesday.
According to District Police Poonch, the recovery was made during the evening of October 5 when personnel from Police Station Surankote acted on specific information and conducted checking and search operations.
Police identified the arrested man as Asif Iqbal, son of Ashaq Hussain and a resident of Fazlabad in Surankote. They said 8.52 grams of heroin and 16 grams of ganja were recovered from his possession.
Following the recovery, police registered FIR No. 324/2026 at Police Station Surankote under Sections 8, 20, 21 and 22 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The accused has been taken into custody and an investigation has been launched to determine the source and intended destination of the recovered contraband and identify any other persons allegedly involved in the narcotics network.
District Police Poonch said stringent legal action would continue against those involved in the possession, transportation, sale and distribution of narcotic substances. It also appealed to residents to share credible information about drug-related activities with the nearest police station.
J&K Police and security forces have intensified anti-narcotics operations in Poonch and Rajouri districts, focusing on both local drug peddling and alleged cross-border trafficking through the Line of Control (LoC).
Authorities have also been taking action against properties allegedly acquired through proceeds of drug trafficking under provisions of the NDPS Act. Joint checkpoints operated by police and the Army monitor vehicles along the Poonch-Rajouri highway and interior areas.
Alongside enforcement measures, authorities have been conducting anti-drug awareness programmes and community outreach initiatives aimed at discouraging substance abuse, particularly among youth.
