New Delhi, October 5, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Congress leaders on Monday backed actor Sanjay Dutt’s recent remarks expressing concern over the lack of peace in India, with party leaders alleging that people increasingly feel unsafe under BJP governments.

Dutt had made the remarks during an appearance on actor-host Shekhar Suman’s talk show Shekhar Tonite. He later clarified that his comments were part of a scripted, light-hearted conversation and said he had no intention of hurting or disrespecting anyone.

Congress leader Nana Patole defended Dutt’s original comments, saying the actor had “spoken the absolute truth”. Patole alleged that people were being killed in broad daylight in states governed by the BJP and said such concerns should be taken seriously by governments.

“If people are not safe in the country, then the common person in the country also has the right to speak because governments are formed by people’s votes,” Patole said, urging the government to address concerns over law and order.

Congress MP Pramod Tiwari also supported Dutt, saying the actor’s comments reflected his personal feelings. Tiwari linked Dutt’s past legal troubles to his decision to later withdraw or clarify the remarks and said he agreed with the actor’s concerns about peace, harmony and law and order.

However, Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Anand Dubey offered a different interpretation, saying Dutt’s clarification should be considered in the context in which the comments were made.

Dubey said Dutt had subsequently explained whom he was referring to and why the remarks were made. Referring to the message of the Munna Bhai films, he said India had peace and was moving towards a brighter future.

Dutt, in his clarification on X on Sunday, said it had never been his intention to hurt, offend or disrespect any individual, community or institution. He explained that the conversation was scripted and intended to be humorous, with its tone drawing from the satire and humour associated with Munna Bhai and the concept of “Gandhigiri”, which promotes love, togetherness and goodwill.

During the show, Dutt had said Indians were large-hearted and hospitable and expressed a wish for peace to return to the country.

“I can’t feel that peace in our country anymore,” he had said, while praying that those days would return soon.
