Union Minister J.P. Nadda on Friday accused Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi of indulging in “cheap and diversionary politics” by staging a sit-in outside the Parliament Street Police Station in New Delhi over an alleged pellet-gun injury to a student during a July 20 protest.
Rahul Gandhi continued his dharna outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, demanding registration of an FIR over the alleged use of pellet guns by Delhi Police during the students’ agitation at Jantar Mantar. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also joined him at the protest.
Nadda claimed the demonstration was neither aimed at helping students nor seeking justice, but was intended to attract media attention.
“Rahul Gandhi’s dharna today is neither for the students nor for justice. It is a symbol of the Congress party’s political frustration and Rahul Gandhi’s hunger for footage,” Nadda told reporters.
He said the Supreme Court had already taken cognisance of the July 20 incident and constituted a five-member high-powered committee headed by a former judge to examine the matter.
“When the country’s highest court is investigating the matter, what is Rahul Gandhi trying to prove by sitting outside a police station in front of cameras? Does the Leader of the Opposition not have faith in the country’s judiciary?” Nadda asked.
The Union Minister said Rahul Gandhi was informed that the police were investigating matters related to the Jantar Mantar protest and that the DCP had assured him that the issues raised by him were being examined.
Despite this, Nadda said, Gandhi continued his sit-in, which he described as evidence of “stubbornness and frustration”.
Nadda also questioned the timing of the protest, alleging that the Congress was seeking to divert attention from controversies surrounding the national song ‘Vande Mataram’. He further alleged that a senior Congress leader had been seen cutting a Tricolour-themed cake and claimed the protest was intended to shift public attention from the issue.
Rahul Gandhi’s protest follows an allegation that Delhi Police refused to register an FIR based on a student’s complaint regarding pellet-gun injuries sustained during last month’s Jantar Mantar agitation.
