Assam Police have seized 50,000 Yaba tablets valued at around Rs 10 crore from a truck in Cachar district and apprehended one person in connection with the recovery, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday.
The seizure was made during an operation at the Old MVI Check Point in the Digharkhal area of Cachar, where police intercepted the truck and detected a concealed compartment allegedly being used to transport the narcotics.
Sarma announced the operation in a post on X, praising Cachar Police and the Assam Police for the action. “Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. So did this drug haul. Good job @cacharpolice and @assampolice,” he posted.
The latest recovery is part of a series of major anti-narcotics operations conducted by Assam Police in Cachar and other areas linked to drug-trafficking routes across the Northeast.
Earlier this month, Assam Police and Assam Rifles jointly recovered around 1.1 lakh Yaba tablets and 223 grams of heroin, together valued at more than Rs 28 crore, in Cachar. Three alleged traffickers were arrested in that operation.
In July, a joint operation by Assam Police, Assam Rifles and district police units in Cachar and Hailakandi led to the seizure of 80,000 Yaba tablets worth nearly Rs 8 crore and the arrest of two people.
Cachar Police had also seized 29,200 suspected Yaba tablets valued at approximately Rs 2.9 crore in Silchar in June and arrested one person.
The repeated recoveries reflect intensified efforts by Assam authorities to disrupt narcotics supply networks operating through the Northeast. The operations have also highlighted the use of concealed compartments and other methods to transport drugs, prompting increased intelligence-based checking and coordination between enforcement agencies.
Further investigation is underway to determine the source of the seized tablets and identify other members allegedly linked to the trafficking network.
Sarma has repeatedly said that the state government will continue its campaign against drug trafficking with the objective of making Assam a drug-free state.
