BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut on Tuesday criticised the Congress over the Vande Mataram controversy at the party’s headquarters, alleging that the Opposition party’s stance on the national song reflected an attitude that was “not only anti-BJP, but also against the country”.
Ranaut’s remarks followed reports of a disagreement at the Congress headquarters, Indira Bhavan, during Independence Day celebrations on August 15. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had unfurled the Tricolour, following which Vande Mataram was performed.
According to reports, the rendition continued beyond the first two stanzas despite the Congress position that only those stanzas should be sung. Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi was reportedly the first to notice that the full version was being performed and allegedly gestured to Kharge before communicating with the singers.
Speaking to IANS, Ranaut said Vande Mataram represented the “consciousness of India” and expressed concern over what she described as opposition to the song.
“Vande Mataram represents the consciousness of India. As an artist, I understand the impact that art and poetry can have on people. The level of opposition and hatred shown towards it, and the efforts made to stop its rendition, are deeply concerning,” she said.
“I will say that Congress is not only becoming anti-BJP, but also against the country,” she alleged.
Ranaut also spoke about the BJP’s recent organisational strengthening and said the party was preparing to address contemporary challenges, particularly those involving youth and social media.
She said the BJP had included women and young people in its organisational team and would work towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of India by 2047.
Ranaut also referred to her visit to Mumbai temples, saying BJP workers had presented her with a Ganpati idol and that she was grateful to receive the blessings associated with the city’s religious institutions.
