Police have seized Rs 3.02 crore in cash from the house of a taxi driver in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district and launched an investigation into its source and ownership.
The cash was recovered on Sunday during a search of Saurabh Ahirwar’s house in the Tili Tigadda area under Gopalganj police station limits. The search was initiated after police came across a social media photograph allegedly showing Ahirwar holding a pistol.
No firearm was found at the premises. However, police discovered several bags containing cash inside a locked wardrobe. A currency-counting machine was brought to the spot, and the seized amount was found to be Rs 3,02,14,000.
The seizure has prompted investigators to examine how such a large amount of cash reached the house and who actually owns it.
During questioning, family members reportedly told police that the money belonged to their relative Ramesh Kumar Ahirwar, a retired Public Works Department engineer from Bhopal who is currently working on a contractual basis as Chief General Manager with the Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation (MPRRDA).
Ramesh Ahirwar, however, denied ownership of the cash and questioned why his name was being associated with it.
“Approximately Rs 3 crore has been seized from the house. The cash has been secured, and investigators are verifying its source and ownership. Details will be shared with the Income Tax Department and other concerned agencies for further investigation,” Sagar Superintendent of Police Anurag Sujania said.
Police said family members also told investigators that Ramesh had allegedly arrived at the house with his wife, placed the cash-filled bags inside a newly purchased wardrobe and left with its key. The wardrobe was found locked during the search, and the key could not be located at the premises. Police subsequently opened the lock. The family members were questioned and later released.
Investigators are examining whether the cash has any connection with illegal activity and are expected to scrutinise financial records and other relevant evidence. Details of the seizure will also be shared with the Income Tax Department and other concerned agencies.
Police are separately verifying the social media photograph that led to the search. The family has claimed that the object visible in Ahirwar’s hand was a gun-shaped lighter rather than a firearm. No weapon was recovered from the house.
Officials said the police action followed routine monitoring of social media accounts in Sagar. Photographs showing weapons were reportedly identified on two profiles, prompting action in the Motinagar and Gopalganj police station areas.
