The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday announced its new team of office-bearers, combining experienced leaders with younger faces while seeking broader regional and social representation under party president Nitin Nabin.
The long-awaited appointments come after Nabin, who recently assumed charge as BJP president, took over the organisation’s top post. The new team retains several senior leaders in key roles while bringing back some established faces and promoting a younger generation.
The organisational changes assume significance as the BJP prepares for a series of state Assembly elections ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha polls. The appointments also come amid reports of a possible reshuffle of the Union Council of Ministers.
Piyush Goyal has been appointed National Treasurer. Goyal has previously held the same organisational position and has played a prominent role in the BJP’s economic and organisational affairs. As Union Commerce and Industry Minister, he has led trade negotiations and handled several key economic engagements.
His appointment has also triggered speculation about his possible continuation in the Union Cabinet, in view of the BJP’s convention of “one person, one post”. However, the principle is not an absolute rule, as demonstrated during J.P. Nadda’s tenure as party president.
Goyal is regarded within the organisation as an experienced economic manager, while his appointment also carries a family connection to the BJP’s organisational history. His father, Ved Prakash Goyal, had also served as the party’s Treasurer.
Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has been appointed a National Vice President, retaining a prominent organisational role for the veteran leader and influential figure in Rajasthan politics.
Ram Madhav has also returned to the BJP’s national leadership as a Vice President. Known for his association with the party’s ideological and strategic work, his appointment adds an experienced voice to the new team.
Former Union Minister Smriti Irani has been appointed General Secretary. Her political visibility and outreach across different sections of society are expected to add weight to the party’s communication and organisational efforts. Roop Kumari Choudhary’s appointment as Mahila Morcha president further strengthens the representation of women in the BJP’s organisational structure.
The Northeast has received significant representation, with former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb appointed General Secretary. Phangnon Konyak, the first woman Rajya Sabha MP from Nagaland, has been appointed National Secretary. Konyak is also the BJP Mahila Morcha president in Nagaland and has served on parliamentary committees, including the Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture.
The appointment of Anil Antony, son of veteran Congress leader and former Defence Minister A.K. Antony, as National Secretary highlights the BJP’s continued induction of leaders from outside its traditional organisational background who share its political outlook.
The youth wing will be headed by Hemang Joshi, who has been appointed Yuva Morcha president. The Gujarat leader’s elevation underscores the party’s focus on strengthening its connect with younger voters and energising its youth cadre.
Kunwar Basit Ali has been appointed Minority Morcha president, signalling the BJP’s effort to expand its outreach among minority communities that have traditionally been less receptive to the party.
The composition of the new team brings together seniority, younger leadership and representation from different regions and social groups. From Rajasthan and Gujarat to Tripura and Nagaland, the appointments underline an effort to maintain the BJP’s broad national character while reinforcing women’s, youth and Northeast representation.
