India’s medal tally at the Commonwealth Games 2026 received another boost on Sunday as weightlifter Rishikanta Singh Chanambam secured the silver medal in the men’s 60kg event, producing a record-breaking performance in the snatch competition.
Rishikanta finished with a combined lift of 264kg to claim second place behind Malaysia’s Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq, while Kenya’s Joshua Amunga Mboya took the bronze medal with a total of 260kg.
The Indian lifter delivered an outstanding performance in the snatch, successfully lifting 116kg and 119kg before clearing 121kg on his final attempt. The effort established a new Commonwealth Games record in the snatch and placed him at the top of the standings heading into the clean and jerk.
He maintained his challenge with a confident opening lift of 143kg in the clean and jerk. However, his second attempt at 148kg was unsuccessful, allowing Malaysia’s Aniq to move ahead after completing a 149kg lift.
Needing a big finish to reclaim the lead, Rishikanta attempted 151kg on his final lift. Although he managed to clean the weight to his shoulders, he was unable to complete the jerk, ending his campaign with a total of 264kg.
Aniq, already assured of the gold medal, capped off his performance with a successful 152kg clean and jerk to finish with an aggregate of 273kg, setting a new Commonwealth Games overall record in the process.
Despite narrowly missing the top spot on the podium, Rishikanta’s silver medal and Games-record lift in the snatch ensured India began Day 4 of the competition on a high note.
