Security forces have launched a search operation after a suspected Pakistani drone was spotted hovering over a forward area along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, officials said on Saturday.
The drone was reportedly sighted late Friday evening near Behrooti village in the Balakote area of the Mendhar sector. According to officials, it moved towards the Mangalnar-Dabrote area close to the border before returning towards Pakistan.
Army troops deployed along the LoC subsequently stepped up surveillance and launched a search operation at first light to determine whether the drone had dropped or was carrying any suspicious material.
The search was continuing, while security forces remained on heightened alert along the border.
Meanwhile, police, along with the Army and paramilitary personnel, continued extensive searches in the forested areas of Udhampur, Kathua and Rajouri following reports of suspicious movement.
Officials said a joint search operation was launched in areas including Khuban, Nagain, Khtrail, Godu Falal, Padetar, Chor Mottu, Kia, Kheba, Bhed, Marta and Joffar, besides adjoining parts of the Udhampur-Kathua forest belt. The operation remained underway on Saturday.
In Rajouri, security forces launched another search operation in Gaibas, Mithiyani, Mogla and Narla after villagers reported seeing two suspected armed persons believed to be terrorists.
The densely forested areas of Rajouri, Poonch, Kathua, Ramban, Udhampur, Doda, Kishtwar and Reasi remain under close surveillance amid reports of suspected terrorist movement between different areas.
Officials said no contact or exchange of fire had taken place during the ongoing searches so far. Security forces are continuing operations to prevent suspected terrorists from establishing a foothold and carrying out attacks against civilians or security personnel.
