New Delhi, August 26, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has invited Canadian investors to deepen their participation in India’s growth story, highlighting opportunities in banking, insurance, fintech, semiconductors, magnets, rare earths and other emerging sectors.

Addressing a reception for members of the Indian diaspora and business community in Toronto, Sitharaman said India’s financial sector, particularly scheduled commercial banks and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), was attracting growing international interest. She said India’s banks were in strong health and significant investment was taking place in the sector.

Sitharaman also highlighted GIFT City, India’s International Financial Services Centre, as an emerging global platform for international financial institutions. She said its regulatory and tax framework was designed to facilitate cross-border financial activity and offered Canadian institutional investors an opportunity to participate in India’s growth while using the country as a base for wider regional and global operations.

She noted that India had progressively opened sectors such as insurance to greater foreign participation, with 100 per cent foreign direct investment now permitted in insurance. India’s fintech ecosystem, she added, was creating further opportunities for global capital.

The Finance Minister identified semiconductors, magnets and rare earths as emerging areas with significant potential for Canadian investors. She said India could also offer trusted and cost-effective supply-chain alternatives to global markets.

Sitharaman said India’s large population, expanding consumption, purchasing power and deepening capital markets made it an attractive destination for investors with a long-term horizon.

Her visit comes amid efforts to strengthen economic and financial ties between India and Canada. She is scheduled to participate in the inaugural India-Canada Economic and Financial Dialogue with Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne on August 27.
