West Bengal has reported more than 500 new dengue cases in the past seven days, taking the total number of infections recorded in the state during the current calendar year to over 4,500, according to Health Department statistics.
The increase in reported cases followed the state government’s intensified surveillance exercise after a standard operating procedure for monitoring and preventing dengue was issued on September 2. Health officials said door-to-door monitoring was conducted across the state, with people showing dengue-like symptoms being subjected to immediate blood tests.
Murshidabad has emerged as the worst-affected district. Of the more than 500 cases detected during the past week, 96 were reported from the district. Its cumulative tally for the year has reached 870.
Kolkata ranks second, with 402 cases reported so far this year, including 62 detected during the past seven days.
Health Department figures show a steady rise in reported infections since April. The state had recorded 770 cases by April 30, 1,946 by July 31 and 3,966 by August 31. The latest figure has now crossed 4,500.
Officials said the higher numbers reflect improved reporting and surveillance, with medical institutions instructed to record confirmed dengue infections as dengue rather than categorising them as “unknown fever”.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had earlier urged people not to panic over the dengue situation amid heavy rainfall, describing it as serious but not highly alarming. He had also said the state’s cases were significantly lower than the more than 7,600 infections reported during the corresponding period last year.
