Pranavi Urs created history for Indian golf on Saturday, becoming the first Indian woman to win an Asian Games individual stroke-play gold medal after finishing the four-day competition at Kasugai Country Club’s East Course with a score of 15-under 265.
Pranavi carded an even-par 70 in the final round to hold on to the top spot and secure the gold despite a late challenge from the field.
She began the final day with a three-stroke lead over Singapore’s Shannon Tan but endured a difficult start after recording a triple bogey on the third hole, which temporarily dropped her to second place.
The Indian golfer responded with a composed recovery, picking up birdies on the sixth, 10th and 13th holes to regain the lead. She then negotiated the final stretch without further damage, finishing the 18th hole at par to complete her historic gold-medal performance.
China’s Yin Ruoning and Singapore’s Shannon Tan shared the silver medal after both finished at 14-under par.
Pranavi’s gold also contributed to India’s silver medal in the women’s team event. The Indian team finished with a combined score of 14-under 546 over four rounds, securing the country’s first medal in the women’s team golf event at the Asian Games.
Aditi Ashok finished 14th after carding a three-under 67 in the final round to end the competition at two-over 282. Diksha Dagar finished joint 23rd after a seven-over final round left her at 12-over overall.
Aditi had entered the final round in medal contention after leading following the third day but slipped down the standings in the final round.
For Pranavi, however, the final day brought a successful comeback and a landmark achievement as she became the first Indian woman to claim Asian Games individual golf gold.
