India is planning to send a large, multi-sector business delegation to the United States, potentially in the first quarter of next year, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said, as New Delhi looks to deepen commercial engagement between businesses in the two countries.
Goyal made the announcement during an interaction with Indian-Americans organised by the US Indian Community Foundation in Chicago after attending the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee.
He said a major business delegation had initially been planned during his current US visit but had to be dropped because of time constraints linked to the G20 meeting.
“We will do that very soon, maybe in the first quarter of next year. We will have a very large Indian delegation, multi-sectoral come here,” Goyal said.
The minister also said India would look to increase its participation in trade fairs in the US and explore opportunities to organise more such events in Chicago and other parts of the country.
Goyal said the issue was raised during his meetings with businesses in Chicago, adding that greater participation by Indian companies in US trade fairs would help showcase the country’s business and investment opportunities.
“We will make sure Indians come in larger numbers and present what the India story is,” he said.
During his visit to Chicago, Goyal met American companies and investors, including through engagements with the US Chamber of Commerce. He said the government would facilitate investments by US companies and Indian-American entrepreneurs in India.
Goyal highlighted Invest India as a platform to assist investors and said the Consulate General’s office could connect businesses with Invest India and the Commerce and Industry Ministry to address issues they may face.
Addressing the Indian-American community, Goyal encouraged greater participation in India’s economic expansion through investment, technology and knowledge. He highlighted the complementary strengths of the two economies, saying, “The United States of America has capital strength, technology strength. India has ambition.”
Goyal had travelled to Chicago after representing India at the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee, where ministers discussed issues including forced labour, the future of the World Trade Organization and state-supported excess production capacity.
The proposed delegation is expected to provide another platform for companies from India and the US to explore investment and commercial partnerships across sectors.
