Former Indian hockey captain and Olympian Pargat Singh has thanked the Congress leadership after being appointed president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), replacing Amarinder Singh Raja Warring ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The appointment took effect immediately.
Pargat Singh, a three-time MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment, expressed gratitude to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, K.C. Venugopal, Punjab Congress in-charge Sachin Pilot and other senior leaders for entrusting him with the responsibility.
“I sincerely thank Congress President Shri Mallikarjun Kharge ji, Smt. Sonia Gandhi ji, Shri Rahul Gandhi ji, Smt. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra ji, Shri K.C. Venugopal ji, Punjab Congress In-charge Shri Sachin Pilot ji and all senior Congress leaders for entrusting me with the responsibility of President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee,” Pargat said in a post on X.
He said he would work with dedication and commitment to strengthen the party in Punjab and serve the people of the state.
Pargat’s appointment came shortly after Raja Warring resigned as Punjab Congress chief following a meeting with Rahul Gandhi. Warring had headed the state unit since April 2022.
Congratulating his successor, Warring wrote on X, “Congratulations to Sardar @PargatSOfficial ji for being appointed as the President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. My best wishes.”
Former Chief Minister and Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi also welcomed Pargat’s appointment. Channi and several other state leaders had earlier raised concerns over the functioning of the state unit under Warring.
The leadership change comes ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections and after months of differences within the Punjab Congress.
Pargat Singh has a long association with both Indian hockey and public life. Born on March 5, 1965, in Mithapur village of Jalandhar district, he represented India at the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Olympics and captained the national side at both Games.
After retiring from international hockey, he served as Director of Sports and Superintendent of Police in Punjab before entering electoral politics.
His political career began with the 2012 Punjab Assembly elections, when he won the Jalandhar Cantonment seat on a Shiromani Akali Dal ticket. He joined the Congress in 2016 and retained the constituency in the 2017 and 2022 Assembly elections.
During the Charanjit Singh Channi-led Congress government, Pargat served as Education and Sports Minister, among other responsibilities. He is currently the sitting MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment.
With Pargat now at the helm, the Punjab Congress enters a new organisational phase as it prepares for the 2027 Assembly polls.
