England seam-bowling all-rounder Sam Curran’s hopes of returning to Test cricket have suffered a setback after he was ruled out for the remainder of the home season following groin surgery.
Curran, 28, had been in contention for a recall to England’s Test squad for the ongoing series against Pakistan and could have made his first Test appearance since 2021. However, the injury requires surgery following the conclusion of The Hundred, bringing his season to an early end.
Surrey confirmed the development in a statement, saying Curran had been assessed for a groin injury and would undergo surgery on Friday.
The injury comes at an unfortunate time for Curran, who had emerged as a potential option for England following Ben Stokes’ retirement after England’s 2-1 series defeat to New Zealand in June.
England’s newly appointed chief selector Marcus North had previously identified Curran as a player who could help restore balance to the Test side. North said the England management and medical staff would work with Curran to assess whether he could become an option for the third Test against Pakistan, while emphasising that the all-rounder remained highly valued for England’s future plans.
Curran’s setback comes alongside another injury blow for Surrey and England. Will Jacks has been ruled out of the Pakistan Test series after undergoing emergency surgery to remove his appendix.
Surrey said Jacks was recovering after the successful operation and that his availability would be assessed ahead of England’s white-ball series against Sri Lanka, which concludes the men’s international home season.
Meanwhile, Surrey handed a County Championship debut to uncapped Indian batting all-rounder Mahipal Lomror in their ongoing match against Nottinghamshire at The Oval, with Lomror filling in for Jacks.
Another Indian player, leg-spinner Rahul Chahar, missed the match because of a neck issue.
