Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Saturday expressed support for students protesting over alleged examination irregularities and paper leaks, asserting that they would continue their agitation despite “detentions or threats” from the government.
After meeting students observing a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, Gandhi said they had placed three “non-negotiable” demands before the Centre — the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, action against those responsible for the alleged lathi-charge on protesters, and an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Calling for the Education Minister’s removal, Gandhi alleged that Dharmendra Pradhan had become a symbol of the examination controversy and said transferring him to another ministry would not be acceptable.
“There is going to be no conversation of Mr Dharmendra Pradhan being moved anywhere… Mr Dharmendra Pradhan has to be sacked. Period,” he said.
The Congress leader also criticised the police action during the protests, alleging that several students had suffered injuries and demanding accountability for those responsible.
Referring to notices reportedly issued by institutions including Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University advising students against participating in the protests, Gandhi said he had urged the protesters not to be intimidated by administrative action.
“They will not back off. They are the future of India; no one can fight them. Narendra Modi is India’s past, and the past cannot fight the future,” he said.
The remarks come amid continuing protests over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations and growing political confrontation over the issue.
