Civil rights and humanitarian organisation UNITED SIKHS has urged media organisations and public officials to ensure accurate, complete and fair reporting of ongoing legal proceedings, saying omissions of important procedural facts can mislead the public and undermine confidence in the justice system.
The organisation issued the statement following media reports that the truck driver facing charges in the Florida Turnpike crash had “failed to appear” or “missed” a scheduled court hearing.
According to UNITED SIKHS, while the driver was not physically present in the courtroom, he was in the custody of the St. Lucie Sheriff’s Office at the time of the hearing. The organisation said his attorney appeared on his behalf and, with the court’s consent, formally waived his physical presence in accordance with established legal procedure.
It said this eliminated the need to transport the accused for what it described as a brief procedural hearing. Following the hearing, the driver’s legal counsel met him in person to discuss the proceedings and continue providing legal advice and representation.
UNITED SIKHS said that, in many legal proceedings, particularly routine procedural hearings, attorneys are permitted to appear on behalf of their clients. It stressed that an accused person’s absence from the courtroom should not automatically be interpreted as a refusal to participate in the judicial process or a failure to comply with court procedures.
Reaffirming its commitment to civil rights and equal justice, the organisation called for responsible reporting that provides complete context, respects due process and avoids creating misleading public perceptions while legal proceedings remain ongoing.
