LPG Tanker With 28 Indian Crew Members Attacked in Iranian Waters; All Safe: Embassy

Tehran, July 24, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

A Mozambique-flagged LPG tanker carrying 28 Indian crew members came under attack in Iranian territorial waters near the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, with the Indian Embassy in Tehran confirming that all Indian nationals on board are safe.

In a statement, the Embassy said it was aware of the incident involving the vessel DISHA (IMO No. 8818219) and had been in close contact with the relevant authorities.

“The Embassy has confirmed that all Indian crew members are safe,” the statement said, adding that it continues to monitor the situation closely while remaining in touch with the concerned authorities.

According to reports, the tanker issued a distress call after coming under attack near the eastern entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. Audio recordings from a public VHF maritime radio channel, cited by Xinhua, captured the vessel reporting that it had been struck by “unknown missiles” and requesting immediate assistance.

Separate recordings reportedly featured repeated warnings from a caller identified as a US military operator, cautioning a merchant vessel against proceeding toward Iranian waters and threatening to fire at its engine room if it failed to comply. The circumstances surrounding the attack and the identity of those responsible have not been officially confirmed.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region. Last week, India’s Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) advised ship owners, managers and Recruitment and Placement Service Licence (RPSL) companies to avoid deploying Indian seafarers on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz until further orders, citing the deteriorating security situation and repeated attacks on merchant ships.
