NHRC Seeks Report on Alleged Sexual Harassment of Girl Students by Punjab School Principal

Chandigarh, July 24, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of reports alleging that the Principal of a government school in Punjab’s Moga district sexually harassed several girl students and has sought a detailed report from the state government within two weeks.

The Commission issued notices to the Punjab Chief Secretary and the Senior Superintendent of Police, Moga, observing that if the allegations are found to be true, they raise serious issues of human rights violations.

According to media reports, the principal allegedly inappropriately touched several girl students and threatened to fail them in examinations if they disclosed the incidents. The matter reportedly came to light after one of the students informed her parents, who confronted the principal with the support of the village panchayat. While the principal denied the allegations, several other students reportedly made similar complaints, following which the police were informed.

Meanwhile, the Punjab School Education Department has suspended the teacher posted at Government Middle School, Mothanwali village, Moga, pending inquiry.

The suspension was ordered on the directions of Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains after a preliminary report was submitted by the District Education Officer (Secondary).

Expressing concern over the allegations, Bains said the Punjab government has zero tolerance for any misconduct involving the safety and dignity of students.

“The safety, dignity and mental wellbeing of every student in Punjab’s government schools are non-negotiable,” the minister said, adding that a time-bound inquiry has been ordered and strict action will be taken if the allegations are established.

The NHRC has sought a detailed status report on the matter from the Punjab government and district police authorities within two weeks.
