Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Friday informed the Rajya Sabha that 15 states and Union Territories have deployed dedicated Tourist Police to enhance the safety and security of visitors at major tourist destinations.
Responding to a question in the Upper House, Shekhawat said the Tourist Police scheme is currently being implemented in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim and Uttar Pradesh.
The minister said the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) has conducted a study on the Tourist Police Scheme and prepared a comprehensive framework to promote uniform implementation across states and Union Territories.
He clarified that the Union Ministry of Tourism has not provided any special financial assistance or dedicated funding to states and UTs for setting up Tourist Police units.
Shekhawat also said the Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management (IITTM) carried out a study titled Functioning of Tourist Police in States/UTs and Documentation of Best Practices to assess requirements and sensitise Tourist Police personnel to the needs of visitors. The report has been shared with all states and Union Territories.
According to the minister, IITTM also prepared a training module, which was forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs and subsequently circulated to Chief Secretaries of all states and UT administrations.
He added that the Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs and BPR&D, had organised a national conference of Directors General and Inspectors General of Police to discuss implementation of the Tourist Police Scheme and strengthen tourist safety across the country.
The minister was responding to a question from Rajya Sabha member Chandrakant Handore regarding the implementation of the Tourist Police Scheme and training standards for personnel deployed under the initiative.
