Veteran Bollywood actress and dancer Helen has revealed the effort that went into creating her iconic dance costumes, including travelling overseas to source special elements that helped define her glamorous screen image during Hindi cinema’s golden era.
Helen, who will appear as a special guest on the dance reality show India’s Best Dancer, shared details about her hands-on approach to fashion and styling while discussing her legendary performances.
During the show, judge Jaaved Jaaferi praised Helen for redefining glamour in Indian cinema and setting new trends with her bold costumes, unique style and graceful dance performances.
Recalling her preparation for her stage and film appearances, Helen said she personally sourced several fashion elements from around the world.
“I went to London and brought back coloured lenses — blue, brown, green — along with special eyelashes. My headgears were made by my hairdresser, and I even went to Paris to source real feathers for my costumes. My jewellery, giant goggles and accessories were all picked to stay ahead of the time,” she said.
Actress Karisma Kapoor, who is also a judge on India’s Best Dancer, shared a family memory about Helen’s impact on film sets. She said her mother often recalled that whenever Helen entered a set, people would become silent and show the same respect they did when actor Shammi Kapoor arrived.
Karisma also mentioned that Helen was known for quickly learning dance steps during rehearsals.
Helen’s feathered costumes, headpieces and sequinned outfits became a defining feature of her performances, with memorable songs including “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja” from Caravan, “Mehbooba Mehbooba” from Sholay, “Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu” from Howrah Bridge, “Yeh Mera Dil” from Don and “Aa Jaane Jaan” from Inteqam.
Through her distinctive style and fearless fashion choices, Helen established a lasting legacy as one of Bollywood’s most influential performers and fashion icons.
