Kolkata Police have registered six FIRs in connection with violence and vandalism during a joint protest rally against the NEET examination paper leak, alleging that criminals had infiltrated the demonstration and were responsible for the unrest.
According to police, one FIR was registered suo motu at Hare Street Police Station, while the remaining five were based on complaints alleging assault on journalists and photojournalists covering the protest. Several media personnel were reportedly injured in the clashes.
A senior police official said investigators have examined multiple video footages and identified several individuals with criminal backgrounds who allegedly joined the protest and triggered the violence.
The protest, held in Kolkata’s Esplanade area on Friday, was initially organised by the students’ and youth wings of Left parties. The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) later joined the demonstration after police reportedly denied permission for its separate rally on the same issue.
The protest turned violent as a section of demonstrators allegedly hurled bricks, stones, glass bottles, bamboo sticks and shoes at police personnel and media representatives. Police responded with a baton charge and fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
Several journalists sustained injuries during the incident and were admitted to SSKM Hospital.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari condemned the violence and visited the injured journalists at the hospital. He assured that those responsible would face strict legal action.
In a social media post, the Chief Minister said he had directed Kolkata Police to identify the miscreants involved and initiate appropriate legal proceedings while ensuring the injured journalists received the best possible treatment.
