The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has arrested Ramanjot Singh, a Sub Divisional Officer (SDO) posted with the Mining Department in Derabassi, SAS Nagar, for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹8 lakh, officials said on Tuesday.
The arrest was made following a complaint submitted through the Chief Minister’s Anti-Corruption Action Line portal, a VB spokesperson said.
According to the Vigilance Bureau, an FIR was registered against Ramanjot Singh for allegedly demanding a bribe of ₹40 lakh from the complainant. The accused officer later allegedly agreed to accept ₹19.40 lakh.
The complainant alleged that the SDO demanded money to avoid taking action against him for lifting soil from his land. Following negotiations, the accused allegedly accepted ₹8 lakh as part of the demanded amount.
The VB said the allegations were verified through audio recordings submitted by the complainant, which were examined during the investigation and found to support the claims.
A case has been registered against Ramanjot Singh under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act at the Vigilance Bureau police station in Mohali.
The Vigilance Bureau said further investigation into the matter is underway.
