President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday conferred the National Teachers Awards 2026 on 48 school teachers at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, marking Teachers’ Day with a tribute to educators whose work has contributed to improving school education and enriching students’ lives.
Short documentaries highlighting the work and achievements of each awardee were screened during the ceremony, showcasing their contributions to education and the impact they have made on their students.
Addressing the gathering, Murmu recalled the teachers who had shaped her own life and expressed gratitude to the teaching community.
“I feel happy to be here among the teachers. I still recall my teachers; it was due to their love and affection that I succeeded in life and am standing here today,” she said.
The President also remembered the students she taught at the Sri Aurobindo Integral Education Centre in Rairangpur, Odisha, saying that she had learned much from them as well.
“I have also learned a great deal from my students. I consider the love and affection I received from my students to be one of the greatest achievements of my life,” Murmu said.
She also paid tribute to Savitribai Phule for her contribution to the education of girls.
The annual National Teachers Awards are organised by the Department of School Education and Literacy under the Ministry of Education on Teachers’ Day to recognise outstanding teachers from across the country.
For the 2026 awards, eligible teachers submitted online self-nominations through the Ministry of Education portal between June 15 and July 20. The awardees were chosen through a three-stage selection process at the District, State and National levels.
This year’s 48 awardees represent 27 States, seven Union Territories and six Central Government organisations. The group comprises 26 male and 22 female teachers from different regions and administrative areas.
The awards seek to recognise sustained efforts that improve learning environments and educational outcomes while encouraging innovation, dedication and excellence in teaching.
