BJP Karnataka president and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra on Saturday accused the state government of being in a “deep slumber” and said the party’s ongoing Ballari Chalo padyatra was intended to “wake up” the government and Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.
Speaking to reporters at the APMC yard in Karatagi on the fifth day of the padyatra, Vijayendra alleged that the Congress government was relying heavily on publicity around its guarantee schemes while failing to adequately address people’s concerns.
“The government has spent the last three years extensively publicising its guarantees. I had said earlier that this is not a popular government but an advertisement government,” he claimed.
Vijayendra alleged that the Congress was under the impression that it would return to power despite what he described as failures across sections of society. He also claimed that ruling party MLAs had expressed concerns over the government’s performance.
“At least now, the government should wake up and show concern for the poor and farmers,” he said.
Vijayendra alleged irregularities worth Rs 5,000 crore in the Gruha Lakshmi scheme and questioned why the Chief Minister and ministers had not provided a clear explanation. He also questioned the functioning of guarantee scheme committees at district and taluk levels, alleging that taxpayers’ money was being spent on them.
Criticising the Shakti scheme, he claimed inadequate bus services in several rural areas were causing difficulties for schoolchildren. He also alleged that the Congress government had discontinued the bicycle distribution initiative for students implemented under the previous BJP government led by B.S. Yediyurappa.
“There are no doctors in hospitals and no teachers in schools in many parts of North Karnataka,” Vijayendra alleged, calling for greater focus on employment, healthcare and education.
He further accused the government of failing to adequately implement old-age and disability pensions and alleged that the milk incentive for farmers provided under the previous BJP government had been discontinued.
Vijayendra also alleged that the government was increasing liquor outlets to generate funds for its guarantee schemes. He urged the state government to waive loans taken by farmers from cooperative societies under its jurisdiction.
The BJP leader also accused the government of diverting funds meant for Dalit welfare towards guarantee schemes and alleged that employment opportunities for young people had not been adequately created.
“Instead of showing people stars in the sky, the government should demonstrate responsibility. The Chief Minister should stop shirking responsibility and merely pointing fingers at the Centre,” he said.
