A court in Bihar’s West Champaran district has sentenced five people, including the biological sister of the victim, to life imprisonment in the 2022 murder of Vijay Kumar Sahani.
The court of 4th District and Additional Sessions Judge Manvendra Mishra convicted Mahfuz Ansari, Rajkishore Mahto, Tetar Ram alias Sadhu, Shri Mushahar and Geeta Devi for offences related to murder, kidnapping, destruction of evidence and criminal conspiracy.
All five were sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Rs 1 lakh each.
According to the prosecution, the incident took place on the evening of May 1, 2022, when Sahani was allegedly called out on the pretext of resolving a dispute involving a pond. He left home on his motorcycle after receiving the call but did not return.
After efforts to locate him failed, his wife, Asha Devi, lodged an FIR at Ramnagar police station on May 4, 2022.
During the investigation, police filed a charge sheet against the accused under provisions relating to kidnapping, murder, destruction of evidence and criminal conspiracy. The prosecution alleged that Geeta Devi, Sahani’s biological sister, was also involved in the conspiracy.
During the trial, the prosecution presented witness testimony and documentary evidence, including the postmortem report and Call Detail Records. A total of 24 documents were submitted before the court.
After examining the evidence and hearing arguments from both sides, Judge Manvendra Mishra convicted all five accused and awarded them life sentences.
The victim’s family welcomed the verdict and expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision. Relatives said they were grateful that justice had finally been delivered following a prolonged legal battle.
