Heavy showers in Delhi and adjoining areas on Saturday morning prompted airlines including IndiGo and Air India to issue passenger advisories, warning of possible disruptions to flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
IndiGo said adverse weather conditions could lead to delays and advised passengers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport. The airline also urged travellers to allow additional time for their journey as waterlogging and slow-moving traffic could affect access to the airport.
Air India also cautioned passengers that flights to and from Delhi could be affected by the weather conditions.
However, GMR, which operates Delhi Airport, said flight operations were continuing normally as of Saturday morning. In an advisory issued at 10:30 a.m., the airport operator said inclement weather was expected around the airport based on the India Meteorological Department’s forecast.
GMR said its on-ground teams were coordinating with all stakeholders to facilitate smooth passenger movement and advised travellers to contact their respective airlines for the latest information regarding their flights.
Delhi and neighbouring areas, including Noida and Ghaziabad, received moderate rainfall during the morning. While the showers brought relief from recent heat, they also resulted in waterlogging at several locations.
The Palam Airport tunnel, Geeta Colony, Mandi House and Subroto Park were among the areas where waterlogging was reported, affecting traffic movement and normal civic activity.
The rainfall also brought down Delhi’s minimum temperature to 24.8 degrees Celsius, 3.4 degrees below the previous day.
Safdarjung recorded 0.7 mm of rain between 11:30 p.m. on Friday and 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, followed by another 1.3 mm between 5:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.
The IMD has issued a yellow-to-orange alert for Delhi and adjoining areas and forecast light to moderate rainfall during the day.
