Ukraine has described a Russian drone strike on the headquarters of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) in central Kyiv as a “major escalation”, with Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha calling for a stronger response from Kyiv’s international partners.
Sybiha said the attack demonstrated what he described as Moscow’s rejection of diplomatic efforts, coming amid renewed international efforts to advance peace negotiations.
“Moscow launched this strike during a renewed push for peace — laying bare its true rejection of diplomacy,” Sybiha wrote on X on Friday.
He urged Ukraine’s partners to condemn the attack and increase pressure on Russia.
Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelensky said a Russian drone had struck the SSU headquarters in central Kyiv and alleged that it had targeted the office of SSU Deputy Director Oleksandr Poklad.
The latest development comes amid continued attacks between the two sides. Russian authorities said Ukrainian forces had carried out hundreds of drone and artillery attacks on the Belgorod and Moscow regions, killing one civilian and injuring 21 others.
Belgorod acting Governor Alexander Shuvayev said the region came under 178 attacks over a 24-hour period, including artillery and drone strikes.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said Russian air defences had downed 548 drones targeting the Moscow region between Wednesday morning and Thursday noon. A separate drone strike triggered a fire at a plant in the Bogorodsky district, regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov said.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier this week that negotiations on Ukraine had stalled. He dismissed reports of a possible new mobilisation following the State Duma election as “nonsense”.
Putin said Moscow remained open to substantive negotiations and backed efforts aimed at achieving a lasting and comprehensive peace in Ukraine and Europe. He added that Russia was ready to engage with any side willing to participate in the process.
