The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday said the demolition of a mosque at the Saharanpur Collectorate should not be viewed through either a political or religious lens, asserting that the legality of the structure was the only relevant consideration.
The Uttar Pradesh administration demolished the mosque located within the Collectorate complex earlier in the day after the Muslim side’s appeal was rejected by the court.
Addressing a press conference, BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi said government agencies and departments involved in the action were acting according to law.
“I do not believe there is any need to view this from a political perspective, nor is there any need to look at any building through the lens of its religious identity,” he said.
“Whatever type of structure it may be, it should only be viewed from the perspective of whether it is legal or illegal,” Trivedi added.
Attack on INDIA bloc over Jharkhand exam row
Trivedi also targeted the Congress-led INDIA bloc over the investigation into alleged examination irregularities involving the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC).
Referring to the examination for Assistant Conservator of Forests and Forest Range Officer posts, he claimed the probe had found that a strongroom was broken into and question papers were taken out and altered.
“What happened in Jharkhand is ‘paper loot’, not paper leak,” he said.
The BJP MP asked Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi to explain who was permitting such alleged irregularities, pointing out that the Congress is part of the ruling coalition in Jharkhand.
Taking a swipe at Opposition parties, Trivedi invoked Mahatma Gandhi’s three wise monkeys, alleging that parties which had raised the examination issue in Delhi were silent over the Jharkhand case.
He said the “silence” of INDIA bloc parties on the matter was being felt by candidates in Jharkhand and across the country, describing it as “deafening”.
Trivedi attacks Congress over women’s representation
The BJP leader also criticised the Congress over women’s representation in its state governments.
Taking a personal swipe at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, Trivedi suggested that Kharge should explain the political reality to the Leader of Opposition.
He then targeted Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, accusing her of remaining silent over the removal of a woman minister from the Telangana Cabinet.
Referring to Rahul Gandhi’s call to “smash the patriarchy”, Trivedi alleged that Congress governments were removing women ministers while the Narendra Modi-led government had the highest number of women ministers in India’s history.
