New Delhi, September 5, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has fixed the premature redemption price of Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) 2021-22 Series VI at Rs 15,334 per unit, with the redemption due on September 7, 2026.
The tranche was issued on September 7, 2021, and becomes eligible for premature redemption on September 7, 2026, the central bank said in a notification.
Under the Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme, investors can seek premature redemption after completion of five years from the date of issue, provided the redemption takes place on an interest payment date.
The redemption price is determined using the simple average of the closing prices of 999-purity gold for the three business days preceding the redemption date, based on prices published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd (IBJA).
Accordingly, the Rs 15,334 redemption price for the September 2021 tranche has been calculated using the average closing gold prices recorded on September 2, 3 and 4, 2026, the RBI said.
The central bank also clarified that SGBs can be held by a trust, Hindu Undivided Family (HUF), charitable institution, university or a person resident in India. An eligible individual can hold the bonds in their own capacity, on behalf of a minor child or jointly with another individual.
The RBI notification did not mention the original issue price of the September 2021 tranche. Therefore, the absolute capital gain or return on the investment cannot be determined solely from the current premature redemption price.
In April, the RBI had opened a premature redemption window for SGB 2020-21 Series VII, fixing its redemption price at Rs 15,254 per unit. The price was similarly calculated using the three preceding business days’ average closing prices for 999-purity gold.
For that tranche, investors who had subscribed at the original issue price of Rs 5,051 per unit stood to gain more than 200 per cent in capital appreciation.
