The flood situation in Bihar remained critical on Saturday as the Ganga and several other major rivers continued to rise, prompting authorities to intensify surveillance, relief and rescue operations across affected districts.
At Patna’s Gandhi Ghat, the Ganga has crossed the danger mark and is flowing close to its Highest Flood Level (HFL). Deputy Chief Minister and Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary reviewed the situation with senior officials and directed them to maintain round-the-clock vigilance along riverbanks and embankments.
Chaudhary instructed officials to alert residents in vulnerable areas and take preventive measures wherever necessary. District-level flood management teams have also been directed to conduct continuous patrolling and monitor sensitive locations.
Following the review, Chaudhary said the Ganga had crossed its previous peak level, surpassing the highest level recorded in 2016 at around 10.30 a.m. on Saturday. He said officials had been deployed at vulnerable points and the administration was prepared to respond to any emergency.
The Ganga is above the danger mark at Digha, Gandhi Ghat, Hathidah, Bhagalpur, Kahalgaon, Buxar and Munger. The Gandak has crossed the danger level at Dumaria Ghat and Hajipur, while the Kosi is above the mark at Baltara and Kursela. The Burhi Gandak, Punpun and Ghaghara are also above danger levels at Khagaria, Sripalpur and Darauli, respectively.
With low-lying areas facing an increasing flood threat, district administrations have expanded relief measures, including community kitchens. In Bhagalpur, six kitchens are serving around 5,000 people, with more than 70,600 meals distributed so far.
Bhojpur has 13 community kitchens catering to nearly 2.84 lakh affected people across four blocks, while eight kitchens in Patna are serving around 2.32 lakh people across nine blocks. Seven additional community kitchen centres have been opened at new locations in the state capital. Kitchens in Saran are providing meals to around 20,000 affected residents.
In Vaishali, relief assistance is being extended to nearly 85,000 people, while 326 residents have been moved to a special relief camp.
The government has deployed 693 boats across flood-affected districts for evacuation and transportation. Vaishali has the largest deployment with 155 boats, followed by Samastipur with 88, Bhojpur 87, Patna 70, Madhepura 58, Khagaria 43 and Purnea 35.
Relief materials, food supplies and evacuation arrangements are also being mobilised in Arwal, Buxar, Begusarai, Samastipur, Khagaria, Munger and Katihar. Authorities said continuous monitoring would be maintained as river levels remain on an upward trend.
